Issue
Recently my Samsung Captivate was stuck on Boot Screen which is Galaxy S Cyanogen(mod). I tried many ways and checked many links to fix the phone.
Research
I came to know that I must put the phone in download mode to fix the phone. Following information is what I have tried to make my phone work. I am writing this to provide my experience and if any points will be helpful to other Captivate users having issues with Boot loop/Boot stuck/Bricked phones. Please try this at your own risk.
Download Mode
I tried every possible way using button combinations but it did not work. Also I have tried to get some 100k resistors as mentioned in some websites to put the phone in download mode but it is a very hard process and it did not work for me.
At last I had to order a tool called Jig from (http://www.amazon.com/SainSmart-Dongle-Samsung-Captivate-Vibrant/dp/B0053H73JQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324573017&sr=8-1). I believe there are other websites which offer for much cheaper price. After getting this Jig, I switched off my phone and inserted the Jig and which in 3 to 5 seconds my phone is put to download mode which looked like this.
Charger Cable Issue
Once the phone is in download mode, I tried to connect it to my laptop but I keep getting this error "USB Device not recognized". I tried installing/uninstalling the drivers but not seemed to work. Then with the help of my friend came to know that it is the Samsung Captivate charger cable is not working properly. Also, I have tried other micro usb cables which come with portable hard disk but even they did not work. Atlast I had to use my friends original Samsung Charger cable and the phone was detected.
Bricked phone with the following image
After this I tried Odin and some wrong rom/kernel which put the phone to soft brick mode. Now even the Jig does not work to put the phone in download mode. But thanks to the Heimdall One click developers who made a jar file called OneClick.jar (http://code.google.com/p/heimdall-one-click/downloads/detail?name=OneClick.jar&can=2&q=). Running this jar file connecting your phone will unbrick the phone. After this again the Jig has to be used to put the phone in download mode.
Now without using Odin I tried a one click load of Ginger bread with CWM recovery using Heimdall Stock KH3 One-click with CWM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338218.
After this I copied the CyanogenMod 7.1 rom from http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/update-cm-7.1.0-Captivate-signed.zip. to my download folder on the phone. Started the phone in CWM recovery mode, selected the CyanogenMod zip file to install.
After the above troubleshooting and installation my Samsung Captivate is running fine on CyanogenMod 7.1 successfully.
Thanks to
1) XDA forum/other blogs or forum users for the download mode/Jig suggestions
2) Heimdall One Click developers for unbrick/flashing the phone to stock
3) CyanogenMod for providing excellent Rom
